The Manipal-based TA Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) have decided to merge TAPMI with MAHE. Addressing the media, HS Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of MAHE, said the merger deed was finalised at the end of July.

Stating that TAPMI will be totally under MAHE from the next academic year, Ballal said students getting admitted to TAPMI from the next year (2022-23) will be under MAHE. The students admitted to different programme during the current academic year will be under TAPMI.

All these years, TAPMI was awarding PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) degree to students. After TAPMI’s merger with MAHE, students will be awarded MBA degrees. Students getting admitted to TAPMI from 2022-23 will get MBA degrees.

On the reasons behind merging TAPMI with MAHE, Ballal said all the major IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) have been giving MBA degrees till recently. Since some of them felt the need to give MBA degrees to their students, they were given deemed university status. With this, they can now give MBA degrees to their students.

At present, TAPMI is an autonomous institute and its governance rests with the TAPMI Trust, Governing Council and Board of Management Studies. As a standalone institute, TAPMI cannot grant MBA degree to its students. Terming the merger as a win-win situation for both TAPMI and MAHE, he said: “We also thought TAPMI should be brought under our university (MAHE) so that we can give MBA degrees also. The admissions will be under MAHE from next year onwards, and they (students) will be given MBA degree. The present batch will get PGDM.”

Apart from general PGDM programme, TAPMI offers PGDM Banking and Financial Services (BKFS), PGDM Human Resources (HRM), and PGDM Marketing, to its students.
