ABOUT THE WINTER SCHOOL
The T. A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Human Development (Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung or MPIB) and the Institute of Psychology (IP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is organizing the fourth Winter School on Bounded Rationality in Manipal (Karnataka), India. The aim of the Winter School is to foster students’ understanding of the processes underlying human decision making, and to apply this knowledge to the real world, enabling people to make better decisions under uncertainty and complexity. To this end, the School offers a unique forum for decision-making scholars from various disciplines to share their approaches, discuss their research, and inspire each other.

T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI)
The T A Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) is a centre of business excellence located in the international university town, Manipal (Karnataka), with over 30 years of experience and mission to—”to excel in post-graduate management education, research and practice”. Max Planck Institute for Human Development (MPIB)
MPIB is an internationally renowned social science research institute located in Berlin, Germany. The MPIB is dedicated to the study of human development and education. Researchers of various disciplines—including psychology, education, sociology, medicine, history, economics, computer science, as well as mathematics—work together on interdisciplinary projects at the institute. The research questions they examine include how people make effective decisions in a complex world, what effects the institution of school has on children’s development and learning processes, how the interaction between behaviour and brain function changes over the lifespan, as well as how human emotions change in a historical context and how they have affected the course of history itself.
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is the largest research organization in China. It was recently rated by the journal Nature as the world’s number one research institution in terms of overall research outputs (https://www.natureindex.com/institution-outputs/generate/All/global/All/score). The Institute of Psychology of CAS was established in 1951 in Beijing. Its predecessor was the Institute of Psychology, Academia Sinica, which was founded in 1929. The institute strives to understand the human mind by exploring both the biological and the environmental factors underlying the mind and behavior. It also aims to become a world-renowned research center that promotes scientific innovation and socioeconomic development. The institute is funded by a series of major research grants from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, CAS, and other ministries and organizations. These grants have supported research in various areas and nurtured many outstanding achievements. The institute currently employs more than 200 researchers whose research covers almost all aspects of psychology, making the institute one of the largest psychological research institutions in China.

NS Ramnath, was one of our eminent guests at Winter School. Ramnath is a Senior Writer and part of the core team at Founding Fuel, a hub for entrepreneurs, and co-author of the book, The Aadhaar Effect. Ramnath was a participant at the Winter School on Bounded Rationality, in 2017. He wrote a prize-winning article, after attending Winter School. The article also won the Polestar Award for the best business feature, in 2017.
