SHCIL Executive Addresses TAPMI Students

August 14th 2010:  Mr. L Viswanathan, Executive Vice President, Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL) had an interactive session with the students of TAPMI.  He started the discussion with, how liberalization of early 1990’s has made India “Shine” today.  

Mr. L Viswanathan gave a brief on the history of SHCIL which was incorporated as a Public Limited Company in 1986 promoted by IDBI Bank Ltd , ICICI Bank Ltd , SU-UTI, IFCI Ltd . He gave an insight on the diverse operations of SHCIL. He give a vivid picture on how trading used to happen before dematerialization. Citing examples from Maniratnam’s flick “Guru” he described in details the “Open Out Cry System”.  Students listened keenly as he explained the intricacies of Custodian Business and Post Trading activity. Discussing about the life cycle of SHCIL and the journey so far he gave a brief on their future plans. This two way interactive session gave the students a holistic view of the stock market and the way it works.


Serial Entrepreneur Manish Sabharwal delivers third leadership series lecture

April 02, 2010: The third TAPMI Silver Jubilee Leadership Lecture, ‘Entrepreneurship as a career’ was delivered by Mr. Manish Sabharwal, a successful serial entrepreneur and co-founder of TeamLease Services, to the TAPMI fraternity in Manipal.   Teamlease is India’s largest staffing company with nearly 75,000 employees across 800 locations in India.  Mr. Sabharwal is an MBA from Wharton and has co-founded companies that include IndiaLife, ICAP India and India Insure Risk Management.

Rajdeep Sardesai addresses TAPMI fraternity

Mar 06, 2010: Shri Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-chief, CNN-IBN and renowned journalist, delivered a lecture on ‘Customer Orientation and Objective Journalism’ to the students of management and journalism in Manipal.  This was the second of the Silver Jubilee Leadership Lecture Series, commemorating TAPMI’s 25 years of excellence in management education.  The initiative is intended to nurture future leaders by providing a platform to the young business minds to interact with the great leaders of today.

Union Budget 2010-11 Discussed at TAPMI Campus

Continuing with the tradition, a discussion session on the Union Budget 2010-11 was organized at TAPMI’s Manipal campus on the 5th of March, 2010, by TAPMI’s Finance Forum with support of the fraternity.  Among the panelists were experts Prof. Avinash Paranjape, Mr. K. Ananthanarayan Pai (Chartered Accountant) and Prof. Rajiv Shah.  Prof Paranjape gave macro economic implications of the budget.  Mr. Pai gave a detailed insight into the tax proposals made in the budget, while Prof Rajiv Shah gave a briefing about the Direct Tax Code (DTC) and Goods and Service Tax (GST) proposals to be brought into force from April 1, 2011.

Prof. Richard Reilly addresses TAPMI gathering

Dr. Richard R. Reilly, an Emeritus Professor in the Howe School of Technology Management at Stevens Institute of Technology visited TAPMI on 23rd February.  He has worked as a research psychologist for Bell Laboratories, the Educational Testing Service and AT&T.  Dr. Reilly has co-authored four books and over 70 publications related to organizational behavior and project and team performance.  He is on the Editorial Board of Personnel Psychology and the International Journal of e-Collaboration, and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society.  His current research interests center on aspects of virtual work including leadership and trust.

In the session the professor talked about the Virtual Distance Model. He said that virtual distance can be of three types – physical, operational or affinity.  He further classified the physical distances into geographical, temporal and organizational distances; operational distances into density, technology support, multitasking and communication distances; affinity distances into social, values, interdependence and relationship distances.

The other topics discussed were relevance of psychometric tests in organizational processes; leadership in virtual teams; politics and impressions management in organizations with virtual work settings and organizational behavior in virtual work-settings vis-à-vis organizational behavior in traditional work settings.


TAPMI Bids Adieu to eGPX Batch 1

T A Pai Management Institute celebrated the graduation ceremony of the first batch of the eGovernance Program for Executives (eGPX) on Thursday, February 18th, 2009 at its Manipal campus.  Mr. Anand Sudarshan, Managing Director and CEO, Manipal Education, was the chief guest and delivered the valedictory address. In all, 30 participants – 21 from the Government sector and 9 from the Private sector – were awarded their certificates in eGovernance.

Kerala Tourism Director Visits TAPMI

Mr. M. Sivasankar IAS, Director, Kerala Tourism (and pioneering founder/initiator of e-Governance schemes like Akshaya, IT@School) visited TAPMI and addressed the e-GPX batch on 12 February. He shared his experiences about the genesis of Akshaya, the challenges faced and the strategies used to overcome them. It was an objective assessment and honest and straightforward sharing of real-time, direct experience, which the participants appreciated very much.

Mr. Robin Roy - Associate Director, Financial Services at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) visited TAPMI on 24th December, 2009  as an invited speaker  of  TAPMI Centre for Collaborative Learning (TCCL).

TAPMI alumnus, Srividya, addresses students on campus

C G Srividya, an alumnus of TAPMI (batch of 1995-97) visited her alma mater on November 23, 2009.  Ms. Srividya is currently Partner, Valuation Services, at Grant Thornton, India.  She leads the valuation practice there, which provides a range of services such as transaction/ restructuring/ merger related, intangible valuations, purchase price allocations, impairment tests, private equity portfolio valuation and option valuations.

At TAPMI, Ms. Srividya got an opportunity to interact with students, faculty, and staff as well as to acquaint herself with the TAPMI’s new campus.  Ms. Srividya had an insightful discussion with the students; her lecture covered the more practical nuances of valuation, valuation tools and models and assumptions of growth rates and discount factors.  It had a mix of concepts, practical aspects and case studies on valuation and touched upon:

·         The various drivers of value in an M&A transaction such as synergies, market benchmarks, and the presence of significant intangibles.

·          Tools for valuation including the common challenges in using any valuation tool.

·          Types of synergy value.

·      Deal structuring – practical perspective of concepts such as earn-outs, non-compete agreements, guaranteed IRR, walk-away valuation.

 

Ms. Srividya also solved queries of students relating to management buy-outs, valuation of holding companies and assumptions used in forecasts

Oct 31st 2009:  Mr.Sunil S Bhandare (Mumbai), Advisor – Economic & Government Policy, TATA Strategic Management Group delivered a lecture on “Recession and its aftermath.”


Oct 24th 2009:  Mr.Mohan Phadke,  International Consultant and Member of TAPMI Board of Management Studies delivered a lecture on “Leadership Vision.”


CADBURY EXECUTIVE SPEAKS ON THE COMPANY’S SUPPLY CHAIN TRANSFORMATION

TAPMI Distinguished Alumnus (Batch of 1997-99) and currently the National Manager, Supply Chain Planning at Cadbury India Limited, Mr. Manish Shakalya, addressed TAPMI students and faculty on Oct 30th 2009.  His topics was “Supply Chain Transformation at Cadbury India Ltd (CIL).”   The event was organized by the TAPMI Operations Forum in collaboration with the Alumni Affairs Committee (AAC).

TAPMI hosts Trans-Global E-MBA students of St. Mary’s College California

August 13-14, 2009:  T. A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) hosted visitors from the St. Mary’s College (SMC), California for a discussion on corporate India’s global prospects and competitive strategies.  The participants were senior professionals and corporate executives in the US, currently pursuing a Trans-Global E-MBA programme at SMC.

July 28th 2009:  Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced its first quarter review of Monetary Policy 2009-10 on July 28th 2009. Prof. Prabhudev Konana, from the University of Texas at Austin, visited TAPMI at Bangalore on June 26, 2009 and interacted with the faculty.   Later, he also delivered an invited lecture to a group of TAPMI students / alumni on ‘Beyond e-Business’ at Bangalore.


Mr. S Bhaskaran delivered a guest talk on 'Open Innovation' at TAPMI,Manipal on June 25th, 3.30pm
