The Blue Ocean Strategy Institute links up with TAPMI

Dr. Robert Bong of CRICT Research, USA and Ms. Katrina of the Blue Ocean Strategy Group (http://www.blueoceanstrategy.com/) conducted a three day training-cum-workshop on Blue Ocean Strategy concepts and applications on April 22-24, 2010 at the TAPMI Centre for Executive Education, Bangalore, for TAPMI faculty members and Senior Officials of PIAGGIO Ltd (Automobile company), Pune.  Participants from TAPMI included Profs. Simon George, Chowdari Prasad, R.C Natarajan, Jaba Gupta, Ramakrishna Chadaga, Gururaj Kidiyoor, Rajiv Shah, H.S. Srivatsa and Chief Librarian Dr. Manjunatha. The PIAGGIO was represented by seven executives from different units viz., Sales, Training, etc., of the company.

The workshop was based on the book, Blue Ocean Strategy, by W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne, which won the best management book awards in Belgium and China in 2010.   TAPMI’s PGP curriculum already gives its students an exposure to the ideas of Kim and Mauborgne through its Strategy courses, but now TAPMI is also considering operating an India-based Centre to cater both to the academic and corporate worlds.

Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS), in a nutshell, is about providing a systematic approach to making the competition irrelevant.  It is about moving away from the traditional obsession with existing competition (Red Ocean Strategy) and attempting to bring in more and more non-customers into the company’s fold.   BOS proposes six principles that a firm can use to formulate and execute its strategy.  These principles show how to reconstruct market boundaries, focus on the big picture, reach beyond existing demand, get the strategic sequence right, overcome organizational hurdles, and build execution into strategy.
